Visit to the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibition

Nous étions une quinzaine à braver la grisaille et le traumatisme post-attentats pour venir nous réchauffer aux couleurs éclatantes du travail de Georgia O'Keeffe.

 Cette artiste américaine très célèbre aux USA en particulier grâce à ses compositions florales, est assez méconnue en France.

Le conservateur du Musée de Grenoble a eu la bonne idée de nous faire partager son intérêt pour cette femme hors du commun et à l'itinéraire intéressant.

En effet Georgia O'Keeffe était un personnage «  dérangeant  » en ce début de 20e siècle tant par sa vision photographique des éléments que par sa vie privée.

Elle vécut sa vie de femme, libre et indépendante auprès du célèbre photographe Alfred Stieglitz, déjà marié, et pour lequel elle osa poser nue.

Ce dernier la fit connaître des milieux artistiques de l'époque et elle exposa avec succès très rapidement.

Ses fleurs, peintes en gros plan, firent parfois scandale, assimilées à des représentations à caractère sexuel.

Elle s'intéressa également aux paysages urbains puis au désert où elle passa de longues années en poursuivant sa création. On la représente souvent collectant des os séchés d'animaux.

Elle vécut jusqu'à l'âge de 99 ans et mourut reconnue et célèbre.

Quant à nous, nous avons pu parfaire notre vocabulaire concernant l'art puisque la visite était en anglais.

15 of us braved the cold,grey weather and the post-terrorist attack trauma to warm ourselves with  the vivid colours of Georgia O'Keeffe's work.

This American artist, very well-known in the U.S.A. particularly for her flower canvasses, is quite unrecognised in France.

The curator of Grenoble Museum had the great idea to share with us his interest in this exceptional woman and her interesting career.

Indeed, Georgia O'Keeffe was a « provocative » character at the beginning of the 20^th century, thanks to her photographic vision of the elements and also her private life.

She lived her life as a free and independent woman with the famous photographer Alfred Stieglitz, already a married man, and for whom she dared to pose in the nude.

He introduced her to the artistic circles of that time and she rapidly exhibited her works with great success.

Her flowers, painted at close range, sometimes provoked a scandal, as they were considered to be representations with a sexual connotation.

She was also interested in urban landscapes, then in the desert where she spent long years continuing her work. She is ofter shown collecting dried animal bones.

She lived to the age of 99 and died famous and respected.

We, the visitors, were able to perfect our artistic vocabulary because the visit was in English.
